About GiGSO
GiGSO stands for the 'Georgetown International Graduate Students Organization'. In 2008 a group of international graduate students, scholars and researchers at Georgetown recognized the unique needs of their over 1000 Georgetown peers, to have a forum dedicated to their student life while in the United States. Under the leadership of Eddy Fonyodi, a Georgetown graduate student from Sweden, and with the support of the Georgetown Office of International Programs, GiGSO was born in the spring of 2009. Since then, GiGSO continues to live as the main social, formal and student affairs forum of the Georgetown international graduate community.
Mission
GiGSO's mission statement reads: "We, the international graduate students of Georgetown University, recognizing the specific needs and issues international graduate students face when studying at the University; yearning for promoting the interests and representing the views of international graduate students before the Graduate Student Organization, faculty and administration of the University; and facilitating the adjustment process of studying in the United States, hereby establish the Georgetown International Graduate Students Organization".
What do we do?
We create a community for Georgetown's international graduate students, scholars, and visiting researchers through a network based on the common experience of studying abroad at the graduate level in the United States
We organize social events, allowing our members to meet across all departments in informal settings
We organize formal events, such as lectures, career-related workshops and other activities serving the interests of our members
We continuously build a knowledge base of issues of concern to our members, such as housing, extracurricular school activities and logistical issues encountered when arriving to and living in the United States, and we use that knowledge base to facilitate student-to-student advice and assistance
We serve as an international graduate student advisory board to the Office of International Programs (OIP)
We work towards the establishment of an alumni network to serve as a resource for international graduate students.
